The sale of new petrol and diesel cars will be prohibited from 2030, Boris Johnson has said. The £4bn plan, which includes a £1.3bn investment in electric vehicle charging points, is part of the government’s "green industrial revolution" to tackle climate change and create jobs in industries such as nuclear. Critics claim the funding is too small for the scale of the challenge, amid criticism that some hybrids would still be allowed under the ban. Despite rising popularity, electric cars made up just 7% of new vehicles purchased in the UK last month.
